CELIA GARCÍA-GARCÍA
CLASSICAL PIANIST
Best known for her versatility, Celia obtained her Master of Music diploma in classical piano performance at Codarts Conservatory (Rotterdam, The Netherlands). Before this she had followed Bachelor studies at Musikene (Spain) with teacher Miguel Ituarte, and at ArtEZ hogeschool voor de kunsten with teacher Frank van de Laar (The Netherlands).
Celia is specialized in orchestral playing (piano, celesta and synthesizer) and performs regularly with orchestras such as Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Dutch National Ballet Orchestra, Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, Dutch National Youth Orchestra and others.
Celia is a pioneer in performing on celesta as a solo instrument. In February 2016 she recorded an album on solo celesta in Stuttgart (Germany) commissioned by Schiedmayer Celesta. More info about her activities as a celesta player here.
With her many chamber music ensembles (Duo IJlstra-García, Codigo Trio, Rotterdam Lied Duo, Maas Duo, Duo Vermeer...), she has performed all over The Netherlands and in Spain, Germany, Lithuania, Canada, China and Russia.
In 2020, Duo IJlstra-García presented the program "Is jazz music too?", a theatrical concert around the life and work of Canadian mezzo-soprano Éva Gauthier (1885-1958) the pioneer who first dared to perform jazz songs in a classical venue. The show combines music by Ravel and Gershwin with fictional letters written by Corinne Heyrman. The director is Annechien Koerselman.
In 2011 she recorded the debut album of Codigo Trio, Martyrs. It is a recording devoted to forgotten repertoire for this relatively unusual ensemble: mezzosoprano, French horn and piano. In 2012 she recorded the album Sweet solitude with soprano Nicole Jordan -artistic director of Alchemy Ensemble- with music by S. Barber and others.
Celia is an enthusiastic performer and continuously seeks to push the boundaries of her art.
Together with Florien Hilgenkamp she forms Rabbits at top speed, a comical classical duo (under direction of Marc Krone).
Celia is a member of the Classical Music Rave collective and one of the first group of artists of the brand new initiative Batavierhuis in Rotterdam, a vibrant music building where dozens of enterprising artists will be able to rehearse, experiment, create and perform concerts in all freedom.
In 2021 she will start the project Folklassica together with percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Vincenzo Castellana: a storytelling act where anecdotes and little-known stories are intermittently combined with the performance of South European folk and classical music repertoires.
With tap dancer Marije Nie, Celia created Classical Tap, a duo which highlights hidden rhythms in classical repertoire.
She has performed at TV programs Podium Witteman, De Tiende van Tijl and Maestro, as well as radio programs Opium, Spiegelzaal, De Klassieken and NTR Podium on Radio 4.
She has been praised for her honest interpretations of solo repertoire, which in her case covers all classical styles from Baroque to contemporary music, with an accent on (French/Spanish) music from the early 20th century. She was a finalist of the Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours and Albacete National Piano Competition.
Celia is a piano accompanist at Fontys Conservatory. As a ballet accompanist, she has collaborated with Nederlands Dans Theater, Amsterdam University for the Arts, National Ballet Academy, Royal Conservatory in The Hague and others.
Since 2012, Celia is artistic programmer of the classical music festivals Romantiek in Keukenhof in Lisse and Dag van de Romantische Muziek in Rotterdam (the largest free classical music festival in The Netherlands).
